Welcome to the CPN evaluation!
We’re happy you decided to take part in the evaluation of our personalised news app!
You are going to test an English mobile prototype that creates a personalised DW news offer, based on your interests and habits.
What you would need to do:
Fill out our baseline survey - so that we know some basics about our testers.
Install the app on your Android smartphone by Sunday, May 19th.
Set up preferred time frames and use the app daily from May 20th to June 16th.
Give us feedback via the weekly surveys that you will receive every Monday
Evaluate your overall experience in a final questionnaire on Monday, June 17th.
How to download and install the CPN app:
You can download the app from the Google Play Store via your smartphone.
Please do so before Sunday May 19.
Follow the instructions and allow the app to be installed on your smartphone.
How to get started and use the app:
When you open the app for the first time, please follow these steps:
Register for a user account with the e-mail you’ve given us.
You may enter a Twitter handle (it will improve your suggestions).
Select ‘Deutsche Welle (Germany)’ as a news source.
You can skip the “user’s location data” setting.
Allow processing of user’s preference data.
Allow processing of user’s time usage data.
Accept the terms and conditions.
Create your account.
These settings are necessary for the application to work properly. We promise that the data stays safe with us and is not used beyond the research project.
You can now freely use and explore all the features of the application. In the start screen of the application, you will see three tabs:
Your news: This is your personalised news offer of the day.
As it takes some days for the application to learn what you really like, the personalisation will not be perfect from the beginning, but improve over time.
Headlines: The most important news items of the day.
Most read: The most read news items of the day.
In the app’s settings (top left) under ‘news configuration’, you can find timeframes. Here, you can select when the app will inform you about new available content. Please make sure you have at least one hour selected and allow for notifications when prompted.
Starting Monday, your usage of the app will be tracked and later analysed by the CPN project members. We want to see how well our app actually works and if it did find the right recommendations for you.
For a better comparison, we have set up the test in an experimental way:
All participants are divided into two groups. Each week, one group will receive personalised news, the other will get a random selection of articles. After 7 days, we will switch the settings around. We will do this without informing you about your group. Ideally, you will be able to tell the difference pretty soon - and we will see how well our system works.
If you have any questions or problems, don’t hesitate to reach out to us via firstname.lastname@example.org
If you notice any problems inside the app, you can use the internal feedback button to send a direct message to our team.
Thank you for testing!
